In Hartley Seventh Heaven – A New Greenhouse at Heronswood!

IMG_3276

The new Hartley greenhouse build is now finished as of April 2025! The greenhouse will become fully operational in the coming months. Garden staff will then be able to utilize the pristine building for propagation and care of the many exotic and native plants collected from around the world. The Foundation and garden staff began fundraising for this critical need back in the fall of 2022. We couldn't be more delighted that the project is nearing its end and that garden staff will soon have an efficient greenhouse to carry out the essential function of propagating, germinating, and growing important plants to sustain or expand Heronswood's already impressive collection. It will be easier to grow our own replacement specimens now, for instance when we lose one to a harsh winter or summer. This state-of-the-art greenhouse will also increase our capacity for production of member plants (one free with membership every year) and sale plants sold at our Visitor Center.

Another valuable use will be as an educational space, especially during the cold and wet Pacific Northwest winters that make outdoor plant or cultural studies difficult. The front (south) facing room will be this gathering space.

For public safety and ease of carrying out duties, note that the greenhouse will not be open to the general public for self-touring, like other garden features, because staff will be busily working in there on a daily/weekly basis. It will be interesting for visitors, however, to be able to see work being done in the greenhouse through its all-glass exterior.

Thank you to all of the donors who helped to make this incredible asset possible and the Tribe's Planning Department for all your hard work on the foundation, utilities, and build! This greenhouse is a game changer.
