S'Klallam Foundation

Garden - garden

One of the Foundation's major efforts is the continued restoration and rebirth of Heronswood Garden. The very popular Plant Sale & Garden Open events, scheduled for March 17th, May 12th & 13th, July 21st and September 15th from 10am-3pm, help raise funds for this important work.  Memberships also contribute to the maintanence and restoration of the garden. Through generous donations, the Heronswood Totem Pole Project was completed in 2016 by artist Brian Perry (learn more). We are working to bring Heronswood back to the world-class botanical garden it once was, and expand it beyond what it has been.

The Port Gamble S'Klallam Foundation is responsible for ensuring that the integrity of the garden is maintained while managing public events and activities such as memberships, open garden days, plant sales and other fundraising efforts to benefit the garden. Other enhancements will include the incorporation of tribal culture and heritage through Coast Salish-style carvings, signage, and the development of a traditional native plant garden.

The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood during the summer of 2012. Current Garden Director Dan Hinkley, one of the original co-founders of Heronswood, worked tirelessly with a largely volunteer crew to restore the garden beds. Today, Manager/Head Gardener Celia Pedersen works closely with Dan and a handful of hired gardeners in coordinating restoration efforts. It is heart-warming to see the amazing progress being made by a small, dedicated staff and many wonderful volunteers.

We are very grateful for this group of tribal leaders and members and horticultural experts, all of whom are enthusiastic Heronswood supporters.  Read more...
